Palestinian dilemmas ahead of Kerry's next round

Hafez Barguti, The editor of Fatah mouthpiece al-Hayat al-Jadeeda explained this morning Palestinian dilemmas to Palestinian TV ahead of secretary of State John Kerry's new regional round this way: "we cannot lose the international shield that currently protects us. We have to look around to see what may happen to us once this international shield is removed". He was referring to Kerry's next round expected next week—not confirmed. He said that the Palestinians must be reasonable- but without giving up their "basics" or "axioms"—the Arabic term is "thawabet" that's to say fixed positions that you cannot change—such as right of return etc.
This is exactly the Palestinian dilemma – the way they see it: on the hand they understand that they must give Kerry something that enable him to continue—but on the other hand they cannot reconcile on core issues that are no starter neither to Israel nor the USA.
The "international legitimacy" is a core principle in the Palestinian strategy- that's why they prefer to sue Israel in international tribunals instead of bilaterally sitting down with her to solve problems around the table. So the best result of Kerry's mission would be that the effort fails- Israel is blamed and the way to the international tribunals is cleared.
But this is not going to happen. Hafez Barguti admitted: "we have a problem with the USA". We have already reported that in the meeting between president Obama and Abu Mazen in Ramallah the USA president warned the Palestinian leader against applying this measure. What Barguti referred to was that once Kerry abandons his initiative – the opposite will happen- the entire "international legitimacy" strategy will collapse and nothing will stop Israel of devouring the rest of the West Bank.
This is from the West Bank angle—from Gaza angle things are even worse. The opposition to president Mursi is gathering momentum towards the 30th June's huge event that is about launching the campaign to end Mursi's rule. Never before were Hamas—and the Palestinians by large – so hated among anti Moslem Brothers rank and file. Anti-Hamas/Palestinian incitement is quite common in Tahrir Square nowadays. The anti Moslem Brothers blame Hamas/Palestinians in helping Moslem Brothers to steal the revolution from the Egyptians and now they blame them in scheming with Mursi how to topple the 30th events.
In Syria – in the first stages the sanctuary of the refugee camps was still preserved but after it was known that the figure who represented the Palestinian cause in Syria- Ahmad Jibril, the head of the terror group—General Command – joined the battles on the side of Assad and the Shia- the rage of the rebels against the Palestinians was manifested in attacking the refugee camps- and the Assad army did not hesitate in bombing the camps after Nusra terrorists took them as bases of operations.
So they lost the Arab shield already and what is left is European sympathy and Kerry's diplomacy. They understand that they must help Kerry but the obstacle of the sacred "thawabet" does not give them space to maneuver.
In addition there is a problem with Jordan. Kerry was eager to engage Jordan in the process after Egypt was swallowed in a "black hole". In the beginning Jordan was interested- but with limitations. They cannot enter too deep into the process because the large Palestinian community in Jordan enforces the kingdom to always support the Palestinian side and not mediate.
On Sunday king Abdallah gave a special speech in which- as far as I can read it – detached himself from Kerry's initiative. He gave prominence to Jordanian domestic problems, to the military threats from Syria and expressed disappointment that so far no aid is coming to help in dealing with the Syrian refugees' plight. One can hear a hidden wonder – how Kerry is ready to mobilize 4 billion for the Palestinians while Jordan is left alone to deal with its growing crisis. The bottom-line—Jordan will be engaged with the Palestinian problem only after they receive their state- until then it will help them to survive…
